Only the cotton is crammed in to fill any spots with some at the top for instant and easy access to start your fire first.

THE MOST COMPLETE FIRE/FISHING AND SAFETY MINI-SURVIVAL KIT ON THE MARKET ! !

This whole kit is put together by SPIRIT WIND with various items also packaged by SPIRIT WIND. The owner of SPIRIT WIND, a master craftsman and extraordinary stone tool maker, has been interested in wilderness survival since early childhood and this kit is not something which was simply thrown together with "pre-packaged" products or just throwing a few items together for the fun of it. (like most of the other kits you will find) Everything included in this kit was carefully considered in relation to any area which a person my find sudden need for food and warmth. A short book could be written about all the included items and their uses AND how to use them. The survival whistle itself is the only part of this kit that was made with the intent of the use it is bearing with this kit.

The "6 in 1" survival whistle included is marketed as a "5 in 1" survival tool. However, a very important factor was completely overlooked by those who really know nothing about survival situations and are honestly only interested in a fast buck........... the lanyard, or rope that allows the owner to carry it around the neck. Keep reading and you will understand why.

The lanyard (rope) is made of durable nylon threads woven together to form an incredibly strong "mini" rope, which will last indefinitely. If ever needed, the threads can be separated for different uses such as fishing line, wrapping arrows, etc. The lanyard is right around 36 total inches long, which gives the owner enough length to use it for wrapping weapons or tools such as a knife onto a stick for a jabbing or throwing spear. It can also be used as a temporary bow string, to help make a 'throwing sling', help tie the main cross beams of a shelter, and many other uses.

The flint rod is a man-made rod that has become famous for it's ability to throw sparks! Although this one is short and small, it works VERY WELL to start a fire with just one QUICK scrape down the rod toward cotton at the other end, because MAGNESIUM is mixed into the metal. It will give you more scrapes for a fire than you can keep count of. TIP: LOOSELY or barely hold a small piece of cotton at the very end of the flint rod with one hand, and use the curved part of the steel scraper to induce the sparks. WARNING- THE COTTON WILL BURST INTO FLAME SO BE READY TO DROP IT INTO YOUR WAITING TINDER NEST and away from your skin!

The whistle is loud and can be heard for long distances even in dense forest. It aids in getting the attention of others who are close enough to see but too far away to hear you. It may also serve to help scare of large predators.

The compass is liquid filled for better performance in all conditions. If you do not know how to use nature to find your way in the wilderness during day AND night, then you better have a compass with you and know how to use it.

The signal mirror is underneath the compass. A very nice touch to help get the attention of overhead vehicles such as planes and helicopters, which may be flying to high to notice you "OR" a signal fire!

The storage compartment is very large even though this is such a small, compact tool with so many advantages. The volume area of the storage compartment is slightly larger in diameter than a stack of 45 USA pennies!!! The height of the storage area is EXACTLY as tall as a stack of 45 pennies with the lid screwed on properly. It is the all-important factor that allows so many other helpfull items to be included with this 6 in 1 tool.

FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF THE ITEMS INCLUDED "INSIDE" THIS KIT:

  1. FIRE: 30 small, round and seasoned sticks- to help start your fire when kindling is difficult to find. Stack them like a "log house" with with tinder in the middle, prepared to drop the flaming cotton tinder down the center onto it as soon as the cotton lights, or to conserve the sticks, use the cotton tinder as the center piece with a few sticks pointing in to the center like a star.

  2. FIRE: 1 Cotton tinder- counted as ONE item no matter how many pieces there are- the cotton shown in the picture is placed in the storage area and it is APROXIMATELY equal to half of a cotton ball. YOU DO NOT NEED TO USE A WHOLE COTTON BALL TO START A FIRE ! !

  3. FIRE: 2 Alcohol pads- simply direct the sparks toward the opened pad and it will flame up. Each one gives approximately 45 seconds of burn time.

  4. FIRE: 1 char cloth- PREPARED FOR YOU, there is enough char cloth included with this kit to assist in starting MANY fires with the flint rod attached to the outside of the whistle. The size of each one will vary but we try to keep the average around 1/2" wide and 1&3/4" long.

  5. FIRE: 6 pieces Jute fiber- specifically for use with a touch of 'fat lighter' shavings and char cloth, but also for use with a piece of cotton, to help get your fire going. Simply unravel the strands and roll into a ball in your hand. The will be approximately 2" long each.

  6. FIRE: 1 small bag of 'fat lighter' shavings- SPIRIT WIND first learned of 'fat lighter' around 17 years ago while working as a start park naturalist/interpreter. It has been a trade secret for a long time and only recently has become a popular item. AND FOR GOOD REASON! 'Fat lighter' can be soaked in water forever and still come out and light right up with a flame. 'Fat lighter" shavings can be wet and then you can squeeze them out like a sponge and they will still catch a light from a spark. The smaller the 'fat lighter' shavings, the easier and faster they will ignite!

  7. FIRE: 1 'Fat lighter' mini stick- the term 'fat lighter' comes from the ability of the wood to ignite like the fat, or blubber, of certain animals. Hence the old clay fat burning lamps. The heartwood of the pine and cedar trees hardens upon the death of the tree, and the retained sap undergoes a chemical reaction that turns it basically into 'turpentine', a highly flammable liquid. The older the dead piece of wood gets, the more 'pure' the sap gets. It takes a VERY long time before the sap is useless, pretty much until the wood the rots. TIP: preserve your materials! Shave a long sliver from the provided 'fat lighter' stick to use with the Jute fibers, cotton, crushed leaves mixed with crushed grass, cedar bark, etc. Also, pine and cedar sap work.

  8. FIRE: 1 steel striker- hand-made by Robert Killgo of SPIRIT WIND with just the right curve for the "mini" flint included on the 6 in 1 whistle. The curved edges by the tips are also perfectly sharpened just enough to the correct angle to throw the best sparks possible.

  9. FIRE: 1 hardened steel hunting point- perfectly sized to work on an arrow shaft or a throwing-dart shaft! Can be attached with the lanyard. Pine and cedar sap can help with attaching.

  10. FISHING: 2 mini glow sticks- added for light and also for night fishing to attract fish. May work during the day as well to simulate a firefly. They are 1&5/8" long and are less than 1/4" in diameter.

  11. FISHING: 4 'reusable' BB sinkers- fishing line weights which you can pinch onto the fishing line in combination with the hooks, and then pinch from the opposite end to release, making them reusable over and over again.

  12. FISHING: 2 size-8 twist hooks- perfectly small little hooks for use with small items such as red worms (wigglers), beetles, moths, etc. Have a slight 'twist' to them to help set the hook in the fish when it bites! Small enough to allow tiny baits to be used with the hook simply tossed into the water and allowed to sit on top of the water, yet large enough for eating sized fish to bite.

  13. FISHING: 4 size-6 straight hooks- long, straight shaft from the curve of the hook to the eye to allow for larger baits to be used.

  14. FISHING: 2 weighted grub hooks- these are for use with the white imitation grubs pictured, or even with worms or other insects to go to the bottom. Can also be used with the grub bodies over a tree limb to add the sufficient weight needed to "jig" the lure up and down in brush or by fallen structures.

  15. FISHING: 2 size-16 hand-tied flies- perfect small size, yellow-green color to simulate MANY different flying insect species and entice the fish to bite. Should work equally as well during night or day, and especially affective with a glow stick close by at night.

  16. FISHING: 2 size-12 hand-tied flies- larger size with earth-tone colors to simulate more day flying insects improving your chances of eating when you are starving.

  17. FISHING: 1 silver-shiner fishing lure- an excellent little bite enticing, minnow look-alike lure that will entice ANY predatory fish to attack. Depending on the depth of the water, tie a stick or other floating device up above the lure to pull the lure by hand at the depth you want. Overhand pull, let it drop a little, overhand pull, continuously to simulate an injured minnow. DRIVES PREDATORY FISH CRAZY! A LIFESAVING LURE.

  18. FISHING: 2 scented plastic grubs- included because........ They look like grubs! Grubs are found all over the world and are natural fish bait. Combine these with the weighted grub hooks, which have a grub looking head, and you are set to eat!

  19. FISHING: 20' of fishing line- for fishing or use in tying, lashing, etc.

  20. FISHING: 10' of fishing line- for fishing or use in tying, lashing, etc.

  21. 4 water purification tablets- each tablet will purify one gallon of water, and do not expire until January 2013. DO NOT TAKE INTERNALLY.
